They actually didn't go out of business. When i went to their website, it said welcome to the NEW Airfix. I don't know what that means, but i assure you, they didn't go out of business.

i model build much myself, but i usually dont use airfix

go to ur local hooby shop to verify if they r making anything new!

Its a rare find. Maybe two months ago I saw a 1999 Cobra kit at a local hardware store. I think Ebay is a good place to look. It might take a long time but there is always good stuff on there. Ive found a few on there.

Using thinned down paint as a wash. You can do it with the same type of paint as the base coat but you will stain it. Or you can top with a clear coat to protect the base layer before you do your wash. You can also clean up the areas around the panel lines afterwards by swabbing w/ a Q-tip dipped in thinner.

Another alternative is to use a less "biting" wash on top of the base coat. For example, an enamel wash over a lacquer base coat, or an acrylic wash over an enamel base coat. Do NOT do it the other way around (unless you protect with a clear coat) because the stronger wash will eat the base!!!

Don't forget to ventilate. Good luck & have fun!

use a product called wesleys bleche white, its an automotive tire cleaner, it will strip all chrome plating off with no bad effects, as well as old paint from the model as well, I have used it for decades on my own, give a good wash after soaking overnight, some parts may take a few days, but it beats sanding and possibly marring the plastic beyond repair.
It works wonder to ressurect old kits that someone else butchered. and you can reuse it a couple of times before you have to toss it out. I know it works on enamel paint, not sure about acrylic though. Look in the automotive section in wal mart, or go to autozone, like $4 a gallon for it, its whitewall cleaner for tires. Brakefluid will ruin the pieces, do not use it!

Comment on How do they make (the dies that produce) plastic model kits so accurate? by Lisa R.

First the Finished Model is made out of steel or another hard material.
A Professional Tool and Die maker then takes it and using a computer , programs the Machine to follow along the hard copy of the model and pieces. As it does this it carves out the indentations that form the model pieces.
Kind of the way a Jeweler engraves a piece of jewelery.
If you've ever seen that done you will get an idea.
Some Molds are hand made by Master Craftsmen with high
quality tools. It depends on the quality and product being made , how the mold is produced.
Some Molds are only made for a certain amount of Firings, and then the molds are broken.
With only a limited amount of a certain product, they sometimes become very collectable as there are only a certain amount out there.
Hope this helps to answer your question.
Mold makers deserve a lot of credit. It's not an easy job
and they go unknown for the most part. while we enjoy the fruit of their work.

Yes, there are differences. Some tanks are integral to the wing, others are a bladder design, others still are external and under slung to the wing. Naming conventions depend upon the manufacturer, but not difficult to discern regarding type and location.
