On my plastic model kits, how can I make the panel lines and other details stand out?

I heard there's a way to accentuate etched-in details on model planes, tanks, and battleships without staining or drybrushing. This involves a "wash" that won't stain the base coat. Anyone have any good ideas what's involved?

Using thinned down paint as a wash. You can do it with the same type of paint as the base coat but you will stain it. Or you can top with a clear coat to protect the base layer before you do your wash. You can also clean up the areas around the panel lines afterwards by swabbing w/ a Q-tip dipped in thinner.
Another alternative is to use a less "biting" wash on top of the base coat. For example, an enamel wash over a lacquer base coat, or an acrylic wash over an enamel base coat. Do NOT do it the other way around (unless you protect with a clear coat) because the stronger wash will eat the base!!!
Don't forget to ventilate. Good luck & have fun!
